Sunday Times Magazine December 20th 2009
Noughties Britain
It started as the decade of rosy optimism. We enjoyed a booming economy, stewarded with seeming aplomb by a prime minister in-waiting who for years had deftly managed to step clear of the controversies that stuck to his party leader. And we all know how it ended: the credit crunch, the expenses armageddon, and Gordon Brown clinging on to power by his fingertips. Not a pretty sight, but along the way at least we had some laughs, often – and most enjoyably at the expense of our political masters. In this special issue, the Magazine looks back on Britain in the Noughties, 10 years that promised so much and delivered so little
