Sunday Times Magazine December 30th 2001 – RIP the year in pictures
The year of the unthinkable – Nobody would have predicted it ;England won 5 – 1 in Germany. Bit for a while it seemed like 2001 would be remembered mainly for foot and mouth disease, another train crash, the return of rioting to Britain’s streets and the electoral apathy that heralded Tony Blair’s historic second term. Meanwhile few had taken a wealthy Saudi born terrorist seriously when he vowed to ‘shake the world’ – though that is exactly what happened on the 254th day, when fanatics sacrificed hundreds of airline passengers to carry out devastating and deadly attacks on New York and Washington DC ‘September 11’ is no longer just a date but a synonym for unthinkable horror.
