This picture was taken in Moscow on New Year’s Day. It was, despite the bright lights, the start of a year in which the world was uneasy as relations between the superpowers seemed to be going from bad to worse and the nuclear prospect loomed ever larger. But 11 months later Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev came face to face at the summit meeting in Geneva and, even if no dramatic progress was made, they found a level of understanding. Today the Magazine makes a pictorial survey of a sad sweet year that has seen disaster on a massive scale and yet a flicker of hope for world peace, a year in which the worst has brought out the best in mankind. It starts on page 10.
