It was a welcome, lighter moment in a year that saw the Middle East turned upside down by Isis the turmoil in the region showing no sign of abating. Russia clashed with Ukraine, fuelling talk of a revival of the Cold War.
At home, Scotland voted to stay in the UK, while Ukip made great strides towards upending party politics. Immigration and the economy remained the touchstones, but as our cover, taken at the Tower of London, shows, we all came together in the end to reflect on a century of sacrifices made by those who have fought for this country.
