Heart transplant: early last month 39-year-old driving instructor John Wade entered the operating theatre of Harefield Hospital to undergo a heart transplant. A suitable donor had suddenly become available in Holland. For Wade it was the end of a lengthy period of waiting. Waiting with him, were The Sunday Times Medical Correspondent, Oliver Gillie and photographer Ian Yeomans. It is the first time a magazine has been able to chronicle the entire course of one of medicine’s most controversial operations.
Our cover shows the ECG (electro cardiogram) of John Wade. The big blips are electric signals occurring when the new heart contracts. It does so independently at its own pulse rate; it does not respond to signals from the brain since it has no nervous connection with the body. The little blip occurs when the small remaining piece of his own heart contracts.
